#HappyHalloween

Well, what's a better hashtag than #HappyHalloween today?   The sentiment is not as positive as I would expect...

#NationalCatDay

I was busy teaching yesterday and in the evening had a dinner with a few marketing professors in Singapore from NUS, NTU, SMU, and a professor from HKUST. The guest of honor was Prof. Norbert Schwarz (yes, it was THE Norbert Schwarz!). Therefore, I had little time to post the wordcloud. Today's hashtag was #NationalCatDay. It was trending a lot in the afternoon when I started downloading. Here is the wordcloud. I was surprised to see Taylor Swift's name getting a lot of mentions. My wife told me that Swift is a cat lady. I hope that's the right explanation. The sentiment in the tweets is super positive. There are more neutral tweets compared to negatives tweets! There is no reason to not like cats. If you don't like them...what's wrong with you? ;)

#WorldSeries

Today's wordcloud is for #WorldSeries, which is basically an American baseball event. In reality the world doesn't care much about baseball and so the world series is a misnomer! You may be wondering why Fox is right in the center. Well, as it turns out, Fox lost power and so the broadcasting stopped and even the game stopped for 7 minutes. The details are here: http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2015/10/28/generator-failure-knocks-fox-world-series-broadcast-off-air.html Anyway, from the wordcloud is is apparent that Fox got some unwanted publicity with this. On the other hand, for the hashtag #worldseries, Fox name was unnecessarily attached to it. Considering the popularity of world series, the sentiment is far less positive than one would expect. However, I think that this is because of the Fox fiasco.

#AssualtAtSpringValleyHigh

This is a tragic news. For more specific details please check out this article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/spring-valley-high-school-student-flung-by-official-in-video_562e9e71e4b06317990f1927 I again downloaded 100,000 Tweets but for some reason almost 30 K of them didn't have the hashtag! That's strange and I will need to do some analysis for that. After cleaning and all, I had just over 44K tweets. The wordcloud is somewhat expected. Any ideas for why the word "Shaunking" is appearing so frequently?   I don't know why the sentiment is still positive about the hashtag. Just goes on to show how bad "bag of words" algorithm can be.

#MTVEMA

Today I downloaded 100,000 tweets that mentioned #MTVEMA. After cleaning I had just above 61,000 tweets. Still that's a large corpus. I don't think many people will like how the worldcloud looks today ;)    Sentiment is strongly positive thanks to Beliebers.

#ManchesterDerby

What is this blog about?

Hello world! This blog has only one objective. Every day I will post a wordcloud that I will create by downloading tweets that included one of the trending hashtags (near Singapore for the time being). This is just for fun. I will also post a simple sentiment analysis histogram with polarities of the words. I will explain in a follow up post how I am doing all this. For the time being sit back and check out one wordcloud a day!
