Sarah Palin

Today there were two news about Sarah Palin. First, she endorsed Donald Trump for his Republican presidential bid. Second, her son Track Palin (yes, that's his name...really) was arrested for domestic violence . So I decided to use this opportunity to see which news is getting more traction on Twitter. To my surprise, Twitter doesn't care much about the son's arrest! It was Trump everywhere. However, there were a few tweets mentioning "son", "domestic", "violence", etc. The sentiment overall was highly neutral.

#TheBachelor - III

I continue to mine the tweets for #thebachelor hashtag. Again, everyone on Twitter is talking about Ben, Olivia, and Lace. Interesting that there are so many other women but these two stood out! If you saw the episode yesterday, you will no the origin for other words better.

#MLKDay

Martin Luther King, Jr. is actual birthday is 15th January but in the US it is officially celebrated each year on the 3rd Monday of January. It's a national holiday. So, earlier on Monday the hashtag #MLKDay was trending. I could download around 110K tweets. Not surprisingly, the most common word is MLK. Many positive words show up frequently - happy, goof, celebrate, dream, legacy, equality, honor, love, right, justice, etc. His most commonly cited lines "I have a dream" must have appeared in many tweets, explaining why "dream" shows us so often. There was a hashtag for "ihaveadream", which shows a few times. Overall the sentiment was very positive.

#DemDebate - II

Today's wordcloud is for #DemDebate. It speaks for itself! Note that these are all original tweets, excluding any retweets. Looks like Bernie Sanders is getting some good coverage after all. It's not a surprise that only 3 candidate names show up all the time - Sanders, Clinton, and O'Malley. Among the issues, "healthcare" pops up frequently. The overall sentiment was neutral and positive tweets were not very high in numbers compared to the negative ones. This indicates polarized Twitter users.

#OscarNoms

Yesterday Oscar nominations were announced. You can check the nominations from the official website . I could download close to 150K tweets but fewer than 1/6th were original and rest were retweets. There should be no surprise that the word "best" appears so many times. It must have been used to declare the nominations such as "best film", "best actor", etc. What surprised me the most was that people were not talking much about specific nominations. There were so many generic words - amazing, nominees, nominated, actor, beautiful, etc. However, if you look closely some of the generic words are coming from the movie titles! For example, "mad" is from "Mad Max".  Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for The Revenant and his name in bits "leo", "dicaprio" shows up a few times. His movie name also shows up frequently. Surprisingly "Powerball" showed up a lot meaning that this was piggybacking the popular hashta

#SOTU

Yesterday Obama gave his last State of the Union (SOTU) address and #SOTU was trending on Twitter. I downloaded 200K tweets and then analyzed only the original tweets while excluding retweets. This is now my standard format. I also reduced the number of words to show in the wordcloud. I now show only the top 50 instead of top 100 previously. The obvious words that showed up frequently are POTUS and Obama. Similarly, "president" shows up often. But there were many positive words appearing frequently - like, believe, easier, better, right, truth, strong, love, clear, good. The sentiment overall was neutral but positive tweets far outweighed negative ones.

#TheBachelor II

Well, I again created a wordcloud for The Bachelor and the results are similar to the previous one ! The girl "Lace" is very popular it seems. And today I have only the original tweets and not the retweets for this hashtag. Olivia is another contestant and she looks like the number 2 in this wordcloud. If you like to know more, check out this page . The sentiment was not very positive. It was mostly neutral. Note that I could get close to 100K original tweets with this hashtag, which is awesome!

#GoldenGlobes

I wanted to share this wordcloud yesterday but for some reason my Twitter download didn't work. So, I got the wordcloud almost 2 days late! The best part of Golden Globes was arguably the monologue by the host Ricky Gervais. If you haven't seen it, I embed it here. Keep it in mind that jokes are NSFW and crass. But Ricky was brilliant (much less offensive than his previous appearances). That's why it's not a surprise that his names popped up so many times in the tweets. Many people won different awards but Lady Gaga, who is an amazing singer, was the winner of the award for best actress in limited series or TV movie. Her acceptance speech is embedded below as well. Turns out Lady Gaga was also super popular among Twitter folks, which is apparent from the wordcloud. Finally, here are the wordcloud and the sentiment graph. The sentiment was overwhelmingly positive, which is a great news for Golden Globe people.

#CES2016

Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has been trending for the last 2-3 days. So I decided to make a wordcloud for that. If you don't know what is CES then you should go check it out in Las Vegas or on their website . The wordcloud is interesting. Apple doesn't participate in it and I think Microsoft is out as well. It's a technology exhibition so there is no surprise that "tech" is the most common word. It's followed by "booth" which makes sense because consumer electronics brands are showing off their "new" gadgets. Intel and LogiTech are the two brands that are appearing often. Similarly, Periscope app is getting some love. Periscope is a video streaming app by Twitter in case you don't know. "Drone" is showing up a lot as well.   The sentiment overall is very positive. A quick reminder that although I downloaded 100K tweets, I delete all the retweets so that only original tweets are kept. This has reduced the number of

#IdolPremiere

Today was American Idol's season premiere. I used to watch Idol when I was in the US and I used to like the show. It has changed a lot since then. Here is the wordcloud. I removed the words "AmericanIdol" and "season" from the wordcloud because they were just hogging all the space. There is a change in the algorithm today onward. I have decided to remove retweets as they don't add to the original sentiment. It is debatable whether this is a good decision and I agree that it might be incorrect as retweets show the sentiment of the people even when they didn't originally write it. Let's see how this goes. I downloaded more than 28K tweets but only around 11K were original and rest 17K were retweets. JLo rules the show of course. She appears along with the words "love" and "like", which is great for her and the show. In comparison other judges, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban don't show up that many times. Harry Connick r

#The Bachelor

I had watched a few episodes of The Bachelor over the years. By few I mean 2-3. So I know what the show is all about. Today the hashtag #The Bachelor was trending and I decided to use it for the wordcloud. Right off the bat there were a few things I didn't quite get because I don't watch the show. What is Lace and Ben? Or, rather who are they? Well, you can read up more about them here:  http://www.inquisitr.com/2681778/get-to-know-lace-morris-of-the-bachelor-2016-with-ben-higgins/  According to this article, Lace Morris is the girl everyone on the show is gonna hate from now on. I didn't find anything strange about her though and she comes across as a regular The Bachelor contestant. Take a look: Anyway, here is the wordcloud and the sentiment graph. The sentiment is not as positive as I expected but anyway.

Happy New Year

Needless to say, today's wordcloud is for "happy new year". Wish you all a great 2016! Twitter was wishing "everyone". The sentiment was overly positive, which is great news.
