#PanamaPapers

Perhaps by now you must have heard about the biggest news of this year. A Panama based company Mossack Fonseca which helped create shell companies to many rich people around the world in order to do legal as well as illegal things (hiding taxable income, corruption money, etc.) sprouted a major leak. More than 11 million documents amounting to 2.6 TB were leaked to journalists. You can read everything about this here: http://panamapapers.sueddeutsche.de/en/

The size of the leak is enormous! Here is a graph for comparison:

In light of this #panamapapers hashtag has been trending today. I downloaded more than 200K tweets but only around 34,000 were original and rest were retweets. Here are the wordcloud and sentiment graph

Indian state Uttar Pradesh (UP) just concluded their state election. The largest political party in India, BJP, won the election with a massive majority. The new chief minister of the state is Yogi Adityanath, who is not only a seasoned politician but also the head priest of the Gorakhnath temple in UP. There has been a lot of complaining on social media about the choice of the chief minister. I decided to analyze a few thousand tweets in order to figure out the sentiment of the masses on Twitter. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive! There are two sentiment charts and two wordclouds that were generated one day apart. The first set was generated just after the name of the chief minister was announced and the second was generated earlier today.

#The Bachelor

I had watched a few episodes of The Bachelor over the years. By few I mean 2-3. So I know what the show is all about. Today the hashtag #The Bachelor was trending and I decided to use it for the wordcloud. Right off the bat there were a few things I didn't quite get because I don't watch the show. What is Lace and Ben? Or, rather who are they? Well, you can read up more about them here:  http://www.inquisitr.com/2681778/get-to-know-lace-morris-of-the-bachelor-2016-with-ben-higgins/  According to this article, Lace Morris is the girl everyone on the show is gonna hate from now on. I didn't find anything strange about her though and she comes across as a regular The Bachelor contestant. Take a look: Anyway, here is the wordcloud and the sentiment graph. The sentiment is not as positive as I expected but anyway.

ISIS

Today ISIS was trending and I decided to make a wordcloud from that rather than using any trending hashtag. The wordcloud shows context-specific words, obviously linking to Paris attacks. But there are some other interesting words patterns too. I thought this was very interesting. In particular the news that Anonymous is taking on ISIS has struck a cord with people. Also, there is some talk about Obama. Perhaps calling for him to fight with ISIS with more intensity? Putin's name shows up a bit as well. Interestingly only these two world leaders show up often. French president Hollandes is curiously absent! The sentiment is very negative, as expected.
