#SalmanVerdict

Today's hashtag was #SalmanVerdict, which is trending in Asia. Salman Khan is a famous Bollywood actor, who is more know for his rash and irresponsible behavior. 13 years ago he killed two people in Mumbai while driving drunk. At least that's what many people believe. His court case went on for years. Key witnesses turned hostile. Finally today the High Court in Mumbai acquitted him. It has caused a lot of outrage but it's overshadowed by the actor's fan base. Therefore, I was curious to see what people are talking about him. I downloaded just above 100 K tweets and here is the wordcloud:

So, "Car" is a pretty boring word to appear so frequently! Yes, it was a car accident, but still. It seems that people are talking about his "drunk" driving or that he was drunk at that time. The word "money" shows up as well, which probably indicates that people are either talking about bribes or money given to victims. If you check the wordcloud carefully you will see "Ravindra" and "Patil" popping up a few times. Here is the Wikipedia page that describes who he was: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravindra_Patil

The sentiment, surprisingly, was not negative. As I mentioned above Salman is a big star and has a large fan following.

Yogi Adityanath

Indian state Uttar Pradesh (UP) just concluded their state election. The largest political party in India, BJP, won the election with a massive majority. The new chief minister of the state is Yogi Adityanath, who is not only a seasoned politician but also the head priest of the Gorakhnath temple in UP. There has been a lot of complaining on social media about the choice of the chief minister. I decided to analyze a few thousand tweets in order to figure out the sentiment of the masses on Twitter. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive! There are two sentiment charts and two wordclouds that were generated one day apart. The first set was generated just after the name of the chief minister was announced and the second was generated earlier today.

#EgyptAir

The big news today is that a plane carrying 66 people from Paris to Cairo has disappeared. Just now Guardian reported that French president Hollande has confirmed that the plane has crashed but no cause for the crash has been determined yet. The plane is still missing though. The wordcloud is as expected talking about the flight from Paris to Cairo. It's speculated that the plance went down in the Mediterranean and that's why you see this word appearing a few times in the tweets. It seems that the tweets are simply spreading this news. There is a little mention of prayers. Literally no mention of terrorism or terrorist, which implies that people are not openly speculating that yet. The sentiment is surprisingly positive. I can't figure out why! Perhaps the tweets mentioning prayers, praying, families, thoughts, etc. are adding to this.

Comparing Jewelry Brands

From time to time I like to study how luxury brands are doing on Twitter. Today I picked up 5 jewelry brands and compared their Twitter sentiment and word clouds. Let's take a look at Blue Nile Diamond, Cartier, Pandora, Swarovski, and Tiffany and Company in that order. Not all of them are luxury brands though so comparison is not that straightforward. Also, There were not many tweets for Blue Nile so the word cloud looks sparse. Blue Nile Diamond Cartier Pandora Swarovski Tiffany & Co Let's take a look at their sentiment graphs.
