One Wordcloud A Day

I don't watch TV so can't comment much about the Fox show Empire . But yesterday #Empire was trending because they had a midseason premiere recap so I analyzed it. This website says that Empire got great ratings and viewed by more than 12 million people yesterday. As it turns out Hakeem Lyon is one of the fictional characters on the show and he got Twitter talking! If you actually watch this show you will enjoy the wordcloud much more.   To my surprise the sentiment was not as positive as I had expected based on what I found about the premiere. With the amazing ratings, the positive sentiment should have been much higher. I suspect that it may have to do with the way this sentiment analysis algorithm works. I am planning to change it soon so I will come back to this hashtag and see whether I get different results.  

We get to see what's going on with The Bachelor again. I realized that maybe I should remove the word Ben from now on. So this would be the last time you will see Ben appearing here in this wordcloud. This week, Amanda is out and Caila is in...in a big way. I see Lauren creeping up as well. I have no idea what's going on so if you watch the show you know it well!

I continue to mine the tweets for #thebachelor hashtag. Again, everyone on Twitter is talking about Ben, Olivia, and Lace. Interesting that there are so many other women but these two stood out! If you saw the episode yesterday, you will no the origin for other words better.

Well, I again created a wordcloud for The Bachelor and the results are similar to the previous one ! The girl "Lace" is very popular it seems. And today I have only the original tweets and not the retweets for this hashtag. Olivia is another contestant and she looks like the number 2 in this wordcloud. If you like to know more, check out this page . The sentiment was not very positive. It was mostly neutral. Note that I could get close to 100K original tweets with this hashtag, which is awesome!

Today was American Idol's season premiere. I used to watch Idol when I was in the US and I used to like the show. It has changed a lot since then. Here is the wordcloud. I removed the words "AmericanIdol" and "season" from the wordcloud because they were just hogging all the space. There is a change in the algorithm today onward. I have decided to remove retweets as they don't add to the original sentiment. It is debatable whether this is a good decision and I agree that it might be incorrect as retweets show the sentiment of the people even when they didn't originally write it. Let's see how this goes. I downloaded more than 28K tweets but only around 11K were original and rest 17K were retweets. JLo rules the show of course. She appears along with the words "love" and "like", which is great for her and the show. In comparison other judges, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban don't show up that many times. I had watched a few episodes of The Bachelor over the years. By few I mean 2-3. So I know what the show is all about. Today the hashtag #The Bachelor was trending and I decided to use it for the wordcloud. Right off the bat there were a few things I didn't quite get because I don't watch the show. What is Lace and Ben? Or, rather who are they? Well, you can read up more about them here:  http://www.inquisitr.com/2681778/get-to-know-lace-morris-of-the-bachelor-2016-with-ben-higgins/  According to this article, Lace Morris is the girl everyone on the show is gonna hate from now on. I didn't find anything strange about her though and she comes across as a regular The Bachelor contestant. Take a look: Anyway, here is the wordcloud and the sentiment graph. The sentiment is not as positive as I expected but anyway.

The other wordcloud for today was for another TV show Survivor. Again, as I don't watch TV, I can barely comment on this!   The sentiment was very positive for this show as well. I tried to download 100K tweets but the API returned only around 62K.

Today I am going to post 2 separate wordclouds. This is the first one, which I created 2 days ago but didn't post on this blog. XFactor is the popular TV show in the UK and they had the finale a couple of days back. So, here is the wordcloud. As I don't watch the show, I can't comment much but as always there is something that surprised me a lot and that's One Direction popping up as the most frequent term. Now it's utterly possible that when I downloaded the tweets, "onedirection" was trending more than XFactor. But this goes on to show how a popular hashtag can be associated with a completely unrelated term. One Direction apparently performed at this event. It was nice to see comments such as amazing, emotional, excited, etc. The sentiment was SUPER positive! Maybe this is the highest positive sentiment I have seen recently. Oh btw, I downloaded 200K tweets this time instead of my usual 100K

Today I downloaded tweets for the show #XFactor as this hastag was sort of trending. I didn't want to get one more sports related hashtag. I wasn't too hopeful about this because I thought the hashtag wasn't necessarily trending. But I was wrong! I could quickly get 100K tweets and to my surprise I found that the wordcloud was dominated by certain words ("factor" was sort of obvious but I didn't anticipate it). This is an indication of a lot of retweets. So for me now is the time to adjust the code to remove retweets. But I am not sure whether to remove them because that will mean that we put the same weight on all the tweets not taking into account the popularity (through retweets in this case. I haven't looked into the favorite tweets so far). Anyway, here is the wordcoud. The word "Olly" shows up because it's the name of the presenter of the show and it seems that he screwed up by telling a contestant the outcome before the results were...
