One Wordcloud A Day

I haven't watched the new Batman Vs Superman movie yet. Not sure when I will get to watch it either. But I saw a lot of people either saying great things about the movie or complaining vociferously. It then made sense to see what people are saying on Twitter. Now before you see the wordcloud and sentiment graph, I must make clear that the movie is a big hit setting records. While it registered the most successful opening in the history with more than $100 million collection, the second weekend saw the largest drop ever recorded for a movie with such a massive opening! Similarly, we see that Ben Affleck was mentioned quite frequently. Many frequently occurring words are positive - awesome, better, great, loved, amazing, etc. There are a few negative words as well. I don't watch TV so can't comment much about the Fox show Empire . But yesterday #Empire was trending because they had a midseason premiere recap so I analyzed it. This website says that Empire got great ratings and viewed by more than 12 million people yesterday. As it turns out Hakeem Lyon is one of the fictional characters on the show and he got Twitter talking! If you actually watch this show you will enjoy the wordcloud much more.   To my surprise the sentiment was not as positive as I had expected based on what I found about the premiere. With the amazing ratings, the positive sentiment should have been much higher. I suspect that it may have to do with the way this sentiment analysis algorithm works. I am planning to change it soon so I will come back to this hashtag and see whether I get different results.  

We get to see what's going on with The Bachelor again. I realized that maybe I should remove the word Ben from now on. So this would be the last time you will see Ben appearing here in this wordcloud. This week, Amanda is out and Caila is in...in a big way. I see Lauren creeping up as well. I have no idea what's going on so if you watch the show you know it well!

All the rage for the last 2 days was about Oscars. I tried to download a few tweets earlier but got some server error several times. Finally it worked yesterday and here is the wordcloud. No surprise there that Leonardo Dicaprio got so much attention on Twitter. This was his 1st Oscars after having nominated six times in the past! Only a few more names pop up with his name in the wordcloud. There is Lady Gaga and then Chris Rock, who was hosting the awards ceremony. Chris Rock opened with a controversial monologue but unfortunately I couldn't locate a clean video. It seems that they have pulled it off different networks. I continue to mine the tweets for #thebachelor hashtag. Again, everyone on Twitter is talking about Ben, Olivia, and Lace. Interesting that there are so many other women but these two stood out! If you saw the episode yesterday, you will no the origin for other words better.

Yesterday Oscar nominations were announced. You can check the nominations from the official website . I could download close to 150K tweets but fewer than 1/6th were original and rest were retweets. There should be no surprise that the word "best" appears so many times. It must have been used to declare the nominations such as "best film", "best actor", etc. What surprised me the most was that people were not talking much about specific nominations. There were so many generic words - amazing, nominees, nominated, actor, beautiful, etc. However, if you look closely some of the generic words are coming from the movie titles! For example, "mad" is from "Mad Max".  Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for The Revenant and his name in bits "leo", "dicaprio" shows up a few times. His movie name also shows up frequently. Surprisingly "Powerball" showed up a lot meaning that this was piggybacking the popular hashta...

Well, I again created a wordcloud for The Bachelor and the results are similar to the previous one ! The girl "Lace" is very popular it seems. And today I have only the original tweets and not the retweets for this hashtag. Olivia is another contestant and she looks like the number 2 in this wordcloud. If you like to know more, check out this page . The sentiment was not very positive. It was mostly neutral. Note that I could get close to 100K original tweets with this hashtag, which is awesome!

I wanted to share this wordcloud yesterday but for some reason my Twitter download didn't work. So, I got the wordcloud almost 2 days late! The best part of Golden Globes was arguably the monologue by the host Ricky Gervais. If you haven't seen it, I embed it here. Keep it in mind that jokes are NSFW and crass. But Ricky was brilliant (much less offensive than his previous appearances). That's why it's not a surprise that his names popped up so many times in the tweets. Many people won different awards but Lady Gaga, who is an amazing singer, was the winner of the award for best actress in limited series or TV movie. Her acceptance speech is embedded below as well. Turns out Lady Gaga was also super popular among Twitter folks, which is apparent from the wordcloud. Finally, here are the wordcloud and the sentiment graph. The sentiment was overwhelmingly positive, which is a great news for Golden Globe people.  

Today was American Idol's season premiere. I used to watch Idol when I was in the US and I used to like the show. It has changed a lot since then. Here is the wordcloud. I removed the words "AmericanIdol" and "season" from the wordcloud because they were just hogging all the space. There is a change in the algorithm today onward. I have decided to remove retweets as they don't add to the original sentiment. It is debatable whether this is a good decision and I agree that it might be incorrect as retweets show the sentiment of the people even when they didn't originally write it. Let's see how this goes. I downloaded more than 28K tweets but only around 11K were original and rest 17K were retweets. JLo rules the show of course. She appears along with the words "love" and "like", which is great for her and the show. In comparison other judges, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban don't show up that many times. I had watched a few episodes of The Bachelor over the years. By few I mean 2-3. So I know what the show is all about. Today the hashtag #The Bachelor was trending and I decided to use it for the wordcloud. Right off the bat there were a few things I didn't quite get because I don't watch the show. What is Lace and Ben? Or, rather who are they? Right now #KCHonors is trending. I actually didn't have much idea about what this is so I went to their website and read more. Below is the press release about this event. 2015 Kennedy Center Honors Press Release Accordingly, here is the wordcloud. I didn't realize earlier but @kencen and @cbs were the most commonly used Twitter handles with this hashtag, which is quite obvious. It turns out that the performance by Aretha Franklin was superb and Obama, who attended this event, was also moved. The words "fur" and "coat" appear because she removed her fur coat during the performance. Among the honorees, Cicely Tyson's name appears the most often. Maybe you don't know the stand up comedian David Spade. But when you will see his picture, maybe you will remember him. Today was a slow day for me on Twitter because all the trending hashtags looked too boring. So there was this minor controversy around David Spade criticizing Obama, which was trending on Twitter and somewhat interesting for me. This is a very late update but whatever it is worth, I will post it here. As you may recall, Steve Harvey called out the wrong contestant as the winner of Ms Universe. This wordcloud below consists of the tweets after he screwed up. As expected, Steve Harvey is all over the wordcloud. Also, words such as "sorry", "wrong", "omg", "mistake" ," awkward" all appear frequently, reflecting what Twitter was talking about. The sentiment chart is not very informative and mostly neutral.

Earlier today I downloaded around 100K tweets with the trending hashtag #MissUniverse2015. The wordcloud was clean with the winner Ms Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, showing up the most often in the wordcloud. Then I went home and found out that the host Steve Harvey wrongly announced Ms Colombia as the winner and then corrected himself and announced Ms Philippines! So I started the download for another 200K tweets. That's still under way so meanwhile I thought I will give you the first update. There is nothing interesting here to be honest :)   Nothing much to write about the sentiment either. But let's wait for the second update.  

The wait has ended. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released and this twitter hashtag started trending. I was interested in knowing what people are talking about Star Wars given that many on Twitter are perhaps too young to know Star Wars. I think that a lot of words in the wordcloud are very operations: see, seeing, tonight, watch, like, going, looking, etc. But interestingly there are a few worries such as "spoiler" and "hype". The excitement is less apparent though. There are a few words that indicate people are looking at this with more positive sentiment: excited, amazing, and happy.    The sentiment is surprisingly neutral rather than positive as I would expect. This is not good for Star Wars, is it?  

The other wordcloud for today was for another TV show Survivor. Again, as I don't watch TV, I can barely comment on this!   The sentiment was very positive for this show as well. I tried to download 100K tweets but the API returned only around 62K.

Today I am going to post 2 separate wordclouds. This is the first one, which I created 2 days ago but didn't post on this blog. XFactor is the popular TV show in the UK and they had the finale a couple of days back. So, here is the wordcloud. As I don't watch the show, I can't comment much but as always there is something that surprised me a lot and that's One Direction popping up as the most frequent term. Now it's utterly possible that when I downloaded the tweets, "onedirection" was trending more than XFactor. But this goes on to show how a popular hashtag can be associated with a completely unrelated term. One Direction apparently performed at this event. It was nice to see comments such as amazing, emotional, excited, etc. The sentiment was SUPER positive! Maybe this is the highest positive sentiment I have seen recently. Oh btw, I downloaded 200K tweets this time instead of my usual 100K

I must admit, I don't watch TV. So I had no idea what this hashtag stood for. It was trending worldwide today and so it was worth looking at. Any fans there who can contribute in the comments? The sentiment is quite neutral, I must say!

Today I went for a simple hashtag. Monday was 50th anniversary of A Charlie Brown Christmas and so this hashtag was trending (http://www.npr.org/sections/monkeysee/2015/11/30/457859235/a-charlie-brown-christmas-at-50). There were not many tweets necessarily about this hashtag but still I had a few thousand tweets available for the analysis. The wordcloud of course contained the words Charlie and Brown and Christmas. But more importantly it had the name of Snoopy most often appearing in the tweets! Otherwise there were a few words indicating nostalgia. Surprisingly the sentiment was way more neutral than positive. Is it because the older people who were tweeting don't express their happiness more enthusiastically?

Captain America: Civil War trailer is trending right now! I decided to use this for the wordcloud today using "Civil War" as the search query. For the wordcloud I deleted the obvious words such as "trailer" and the title of the movie. Here is the wordcloud, which looks quite uninformative to me. I don't know why f-word shows up here although less frequently The sentiment is overly positive. No wonder here. People like this guy and they liked the trailer as well!
