#PanamaPapers

Perhaps by now you must have heard about the biggest news of this year. A Panama based company Mossack Fonseca which helped create shell companies to many rich people around the world in order to do legal as well as illegal things (hiding taxable income, corruption money, etc.) sprouted a major leak. More than 11 million documents amounting to 2.6 TB were leaked to journalists. You can read everything about this here: http://panamapapers.sueddeutsche.de/en/

In light of this #panamapapers hashtag has been trending today. I downloaded more than 200K tweets but only around 34,000 were original and rest were retweets. Here are the wordcloud and sentiment graph

The new chief minister of the state is Yogi Adityanath, who is not only a seasoned politician but also the head priest of the Gorakhnath temple in UP. There has been a lot of complaining on social media about the choice of the chief minister. I decided to analyze a few thousand tweets in order to figure out the sentiment of the masses on Twitter. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive! There are two sentiment charts and two wordclouds that were generated one day apart. The first set was generated just after the name of the chief minister was announced and the second was generated earlier today.

#EgyptAir

The big news today is that a plane carrying 66 people from Paris to Cairo has disappeared. Just now Guardian reported that French president Hollande has confirmed that the plane has crashed but no cause for the crash has been determined yet. The plane is still missing though. The wordcloud is as expected talking about the flight from Paris to Cairo. It's speculated that the plance went down in the Mediterranean and that's why you see this word appearing a few times in the tweets. It seems that the tweets are simply spreading this news. There is a little mention of prayers. Literally no mention of terrorism or terrorist, which implies that people are not openly speculating that yet. The sentiment is surprisingly positive. I can't figure out why! Perhaps the tweets mentioning prayers, praying, families, thoughts, etc. are adding to this.

Eagles

Today I didn't use a hashtag to extract tweets. Instead I used the keyword "Eagles" because it's trending a lot. If you are a non American and a non American Football fan like me, you wold wonder whether the keyword is for the bird eagle or the rock band The Eagles. But those in the know would have guessed it that the story is about Philadelphia Eagles who defeated New England Patriots with 35-28. The wordcloud tells the story quite clearly. The most commonly associated word with Eagles is Patriots! Who would have guessed that? The sentiment remains neutral. This is again strange for me but looks like I had not seen it all after all.
