#IllShowYou

Today is Justin Bieber's day! The hashtag for today is #IllShowYou, which is Justin's latest single. I found this audio on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5gYDOmERU8

The wordcloud is a bit crappy because there are long words that are the leftover hyperlinks. So they really don't mean anything. I guess these links were shared a lot on Twitter and my code didn't do a good job of removing them. Anyway, I will adapt my code soon to fix this.

I thought it was interesting that Skrillex appeared many times in the tweets with this hashtag. He is in the news because of some Twitter fight he got into with Deadmau5 (omg, what the heck is happening to me?) but I don't know why that should relate to this hashtag. The words "purpose" and "get" show up several times as well. I guess "get" is for getting the song but I might be wrong there. As "preorder" is also showing a few times, "get" is likely to mean buy.

Justin Bieber is hugely popular but he is also hated by a bunch of people. Well, that shows up pretty much in the sentiment analysis. I had never seen a sentiment graph like this one before. JB is a super polarizing figure!

#Oscars 2016

All the rage for the last 2 days was about Oscars. I tried to download a few tweets earlier but got some server error several times. Finally it worked yesterday and here is the wordcloud. No surprise there that Leonardo Dicaprio got so much attention on Twitter. This was his 1st Oscars after having nominated six times in the past! Only a few more names pop up with his name in the wordcloud. There is Lady Gaga and then Chris Rock, who was hosting the awards ceremony. Chris Rock opened with a controversial monologue but unfortunately I couldn't locate a clean video. It seems that they have pulled it off different networks. #SanBernadino Update

This is an update on the San Bernardino shooting. When I created the last post , I had downloaded the tweets before the shooters were identified. People were blaming NRA for the shooting. Now that the killers have been identified as Muslims, suddenly Twitter is blaming all the Muslims! Well, that's reflected in the wordcloud: The sentiment is still neutral though.

#PanamaPapers

Perhaps by now you must have heard about the biggest news of this year. A Panama based company Mossack Fonseca which helped create shell companies to many rich people around the world in order to do legal as well as illegal things (hiding taxable income, corruption money, etc.) sprouted a major leak. More than 11 million documents amounting to 2.6 TB were leaked to journalists. You can read everything about this here: http://panamapapers.sueddeutsche.de/en/ The size of the leak is enormous! Here is a graph for comparison: In light of this #panamapapers hashtag has been trending today. I downloaded more than 200K tweets but only around 34,000 were original and rest were retweets.
