George Zimmerman

Today George Zimmarman is trending because he announced that he will auction off the gun he used to kill Treyvon Martin. It's pretty sad.

Anyway I decided to use this search term for getting the wordcloud because generally I don't have negative keywords on this blog. I was also curious to know whether people on Twitter will support him or oppose him.

As it's apparent from the sentiment graph, a majority of Twitter users disliked the news. The sentiment is overly negative with only about 10% people saying positive things about it. In the wordcloud, the main discussion topic is "gun" and words around it. This is not surprising because George Zimmarman usually is not trending. So this bunch of tweets are all about the auctioning of the gun. I think a lot of people also were a bit outraged because his name is "trending" on Twitter. But by showing this outrage probably they added to the trending topic! For example, this tweet received a lot of attention, which probably added to the trend.

Finally, here are the wordcloud and sentiment graph

#XFactorFinal

Today I am going to post 2 separate wordclouds. This is the first one, which I created 2 days ago but didn't post on this blog. XFactor is the popular TV show in the UK and they had the finale a couple of days back. So, here is the wordcloud. As I don't watch the show, I can't comment much but as always there is something that surprised me a lot and that's One Direction popping up as the most frequent term. Now it's utterly possible that when I downloaded the tweets, "onedirection" was trending more than XFactor. But this goes on to show how a popular hashtag can be associated with a completely unrelated term. One Direction apparently performed at this event. It was nice to see comments such as amazing, emotional, excited, etc. The sentiment was SUPER positive! Maybe this is the highest positive sentiment I have seen recently. Oh btw, I downloaded 200K tweets this time instead of my usual 100K

#GOPDebate

Sorry for the break over the last few days. I was in Shanghai and all Google services are blocked there including Blogger.com. Also, Twitter is blocked so I couldn't get any tweets to analyze. Now that I am back in Singapore, here is the wordcloud for today. Trump is at the center of the GOP debate! He is killing it (on Twitter at least). Interestingly Ted Cruz and Rubio are now showing up. Fiorina and Carson get a few mentions. But look at Jeb Bush! Can you even spot him here? The sentiment is as expected. Clearly way more positive than negative.

ISIS

Today ISIS was trending and I decided to make a wordcloud from that rather than using any trending hashtag. The wordcloud shows context-specific words, obviously linking to Paris attacks. But there are some other interesting words patterns too. I thought this was very interesting. In particular the news that Anonymous is taking on ISIS has struck a cord with people. Also, there is some talk about Obama. Perhaps calling for him to fight with ISIS with more intensity? Putin's name shows up a bit as well. Interestingly only these two world leaders show up often. French president Hollandes is curiously absent! The sentiment is very negative, as expected.
